MOVIE REVIEW: Pitch Perfect 2

The Barden Bellas are back in Pitch Perfect 2; funnier and flashier but it was like a very good old song sang in a monotone choral. There are no “You Don’t Forget About Me” or “Cups” moments nor “The Sign” or “Eternal Flame” melodies. However,  what it lacks in its lackadaisical song choices, it compensates with Fat Amy’s and the Asian Lilly’s overexposed outrageous but amusing behavior. the movie in general was all fun that it forgets to connect to the soul, missing the whole point of what music should be.

Pitch Perfect (the first movie) was a huge success especially in the Philippines. Our country even gets a mention in the movie (probably out of gratitude) through a ladyboy accapella group which I think is more apt if they were from Thailand.
If you are ready to feel Christmas in a summer day, Pitch Perfect may just be the most entertaining movie for you. But if you don’t like Jessie J, Ke$ha, Taylor Swift or John Mayer, you may skip this.

PRESS RELEASE: PLDT releases new telsets, Regine Series

The Songbird, Ms. Regine Velasquez may be holding a lot of excellent titles in the field of music, movies and television, but if you talk to her at length, you would know in your heart that it is being Mommy to three-year-old Nate that gives her life the utmost inspiration.

It is along this line that PLDT HOME’s Mother’s Day Campaign finds a most opportune time to give tribute not only to the artistry of Ms. Regine Velasquez but also to the real values in life she holds dear. For the voice that never fails to bring us back HOME belongs to a devoted and loving mother to her only son Nate.

The Mothers’ Day campaign introduces the new landline Telsets featuring the Regine Series paired with PLDT’s best calling rates ever. Subscribers with landline get a wonderful treat with the following offers: Add as low as P75/month to get new telsets with features depending on the unit like Caller ID or Answering Machine; Add just P75/month for FREE NDD Calls (PLDT to PLDT Nationwide) + P10 per call to SMART/Talk N’ Text; and Add only P50/month to enjoy Free 15 minute calls per month to US, Canada, China, HongKong, Singapore, Guam and Hawaii, with lowest IDD rate of P2/succeeding minute

Regine is happy with her connection with the PLDT HOME team. “They have been very supportive of everything I do. They allow me stay connected to my own home and for a working mother like me, you know that keeping in close contact with our family is everything. Especially that I have a growing little boy who never fails to surprise me with his discoveries every single day,” she enthused.

When I became pregnant, my sisters and my friends told me my life was going to be different. I realized I had no idea what they were talking about. Not until I had Nate,” she said with a satisfied smile on her face. “Everything about my life changed completely. I have a totally different perspective now, a different outlook in life,” she declares with contagious enthusiasm.

Mrs. Ogie Alcasid considers every single day blessed. Her marriage was immediately gifted by this bundle of joy she and her husband christened Nathaniel James. “He will turn four in November. How time flies! So far, so good. We are very, very happy with how things are with Nate. A lot of people tell us how behaved and good a kid Nate is. Hindi siya yung katuladng ibang bata na sobrang malikot kahit nasa labas. He behaves well. He is not a spoiled brat because we are very conscious of that, being an only son so far. He listens to us when we caution him.  He remembers what we teach him. We couldn’t be prouder,” she shares.

Regine says the one thing that she and her husband Ogie are conscious about when it comes to instilling discipline in their son is that they should always be on the same side. “We don’t employ the good cop-bad cop scheme in our parenting style. The only rule is that the “aggrieved” parent should be the one to discipline the boy. So kung ako ang nagalit sa kanya over something he did, I will be the one to discipline him.”

Regine confesses that she didn’t think at first that it was in her to be the one to give Nate some spanking. “But I did it. I think I have spanked him three times already for throwing away things, like my Ipad. We have learned a lot from our Pastor in church how to discipline a child. From ages 0-12, our Pastor told us that we can instill discipline in them and break their developing pride by spanking. Past that age, it will be very hard already. If you spank them when they are older, you won’t be breaking their pride anymore, but their spirit,” Regine said. “I think our parenting style is working because Nate is a well-behaved boy and is truly a joy to be with even when we travel long distance,” she added.

When asked what she considers the highlights of being a mother so far are, Regine was quick to say, “Everyday is a highlight!” And we believe her.

“Every day there is something new with him. Either he says a new word or discovers something new that he shows us. That is why I am very conscious to be present in his life. I never want to miss out on anything. When I am working, we are in constant communication with his yaya. She sends me pictures of him when I am not with him.”

For this particular interview (done behind the scenes of her pictorial for PLDT HOME’s Mother’s Day campaign), Reginesaid Nate was with his Yaya nearby waiting for her to finish. “He is very patient because we explain to him that we need to work. Sometimes we think our children don’t understand this kind of things. But in my experience, I know that children are smart and they have the capability to understand and comprehend, more than what we want to give them credit for. It shouldn’t stop us adults, from involving them,” she said.

The doting mother says they are training him to speak in fluent Tagalog right now saying that Nate is learning English easily from school and the television shows that he watches everyday. Unlike most Filipino parents who give more weight on teaching their children to speak in English, the Alcasids differ in perspective. “Mas weird kasi kung hirap siya sa Tagalog bilang nandito naman tayo sa Pilipinas,” Regine said with so much logic. “The beauty of this stage in my son’s life is that he really converses with us now. Before kasinagsasalita siya perowala pang sense. Now, it’s so nice to talk to him. Nagkukwentonanakakatuwa

Regine is very grateful for the kind of workload that she is allowed to have at this point in her life. “I had a major shift in my priorities and I am so thankful that the people I work for understand this. I still get to work to help my husband but the load is just perfect for me to still be very much present in my son’s life. I am truly blessed,” she says.

So what is her dream for her Nate? Regine answers from the heart. “I have none. I feel that it is his job to dream for himself, whatever and whoever he wants to be. I feel that I have to allow him the same liberty that my parents gave me when I was growing up. Binigyan ako ng kalayaan ng mga magulangko na mangarap, kaya ako nandito ngayon. Yun din ang gusto kong ibigay kay Nate,” she said.

Regine believes that the role of the parent is to make sure that their children grow up instilled with discipline and values. “We are here to provide support and the necessary ammunition for them to work on and realize their dreams someday. If anything, I just want my Nate to grow up to be a follower of Jesus Christ. When he fears God, I know that his future is set,” the example of a mother who knows best, ends.

PRESS RELEASE: CEBU JOINS THE GLOBAL EFFORT TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN WITH ‘THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES’

If your vagina could talk, what would it say? If your vagina got dressed, what would it wear?

It’s that time of the year again when the vaginas are coming… to Cebu, that is. Production company 2tincans Philippines, Inc. has been granted the rights for a V-Day Cebu presentation of The Vagina Monologues to raise money and awareness for local organizations that work to stop violence against women and girls.

The award-winning play is based on V-Day founder and playwright Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace, the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength.

Through this play and the liberation of the word ‘vagina’, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than sixteen years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public.

With a script that has, for the most part, remained unchanged, the challenge is how to put on a different show every time. This year’s producing artistic director, Sarah Mae Enclona-Henderson has assembled a diverse cast of 20 women to bring the Monologues to life—Joan Saniel-Amit, Maxi Bolongaita, Laurie Boquiren, Cattski, Pami Estalilla, Bea Evardone, Chai Fonacier, Margo Frasco, Deborah Hayes, Candice Hintz, Gem Icamen, Gingging Navarro-Laude, Aleah Lim, Regal Oliva, Andrea Pateña, Stephanie Sitoy, Brazzy Valdez, Charlene Virlouvet and Jo-Ann Zaldumbide.

“With The Vagina Monologues being known more than ever as a successful, award-winning play, it is important to see that vagina monologues happen everyday,” says Enclona-Henderson, who first brought The Vagina Monologues to Cebu back in 2001. “The stories are real and both women and men need to hear them.”

This year’s production will be for the benefit of Bidlisiw Foundation, Inc., a local non-government organization focused on helping the urban poor families and supporting women’s causes.

The V-Day Cebu 2015 production of The Vagina Monologues is supported by The Henry Hotel, 22 Tango Records, Castilex Industrial Corp., Hair by Gino Fonghe, Isidra Comfort Cantina, Jamaica Markets Corp. Koncepto Events, Makeup by Arnauld, MyAdvocacy, Saraban and Your House Doctors. Media partners include Y101 Always First and Zee Lifestyle.

CatchThe Vagina Monologues on May 23 and 30 at 8:00 p.m., at Space 150 of The Henry Hotel For tickets and other inquiries, call 6332. 512 3134 or 260 7080.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Longest Ride

If you are familiar with Nicholas Sparks’ works you probably know how usually his stories would end but The Longest Ride took a different turn off the beaten path. Someone died but at least it wasn’t the end of the movie.

A story about a bull rider who has to decide which bull should he stay for a ride. There are quite a  number of bullshit in the movie — the parallel plots of the love stories of the characters, the unreasonable demands, the elite-commoner relationship challenges, and the terrible fickle mindedness of the main characters that kept the movie running — but you’ll definitely stay on the ride to the end. Don’t jump off as  the best parts of the movie is on its first and last 15 minutes.

Chemistry between the lead couple is weak.  The light romance theme of the film wasn’t able to help it. But it doesn’t mean you can’t have a good laugh and sometimes wet eyes along with them. Girls this one is for you.
In general, The Longest Ride is enjoyable, heart warming, and quite predictable.

Ilaputi turns 13

My favorite after-movie-restaurant (no, make that after-party, after-date, after-massage or after-everything, actually), Ilaputi, turns 13 on April 20, 2015.

It’s heart warming to see how a “carenderia” which was first intended for students had evolved into a casual sit-down restaurant serving in a more upscale location, the Asiatown IT Park with around 60 pax seating capacity. Growing up like their first costumers who are now leaders in their own field Ilaputi has also become a front-runner in consistently delighting cebuanos and tourists with its Asian soulful food. It blazed the trail of the ever progressive Cebu upscale-casual dining scene; it is the first among its equals to open 24 hours everyday. On its 13th year, the company is poised to expand to several locations including a new one in Cbeu and several franchises in Manila and Mindanao.

Ilaputi does not only inspire the palate of its patrons, it has also become a venue where relationships are forged and great memories are created.

Here is a revisit to their Asian soulful offerings according preference or to the frequency of my order.

The Stroganov

Beef Stroganoff. The dish that everybody loves and made Ilaputi famous.

Bibimbap

The not-so-korean Bibimbap is an intermarriage between the best of Korea and the flare of the Philippines. A feast in the bowl without the guilt.

Southside Ribs

Inspired with the flavourful  combination of Chippy & Coke, Southside Ribs is a playful war between the saltiness of the salted egg and fried rice mix in against the sweetness of the guava barbecue sauce on the ribs.  When you try this, please go easy on the rice.

Gambas

Gambas at it’s core; not sweet, no tomatoes. Garlic, Paprika and Cayene pepper with the freshest shrimps. Perfect! So good, it deserves a repeat performance.

Saigon Adobo

Saigon Adobo, the safest of them all. Who can go wrong on Adobo?

Kung Pao Chicken. Black Vinegar, toasted Schezwan Pepper corn and nuts in an infused peanut oil. This one is screaming for cold beer, or why not try Ilaputi’s Joy Juice for fun.

Grilled Liempo with a sinuglaw twist.

Grilled Liempo is for the Sinuglaw loving Cebuanos. Marinated garlic pork belly with coconut milk and vinegar dip. Same flavor but no raw fish. Yummy!

Grilled Chinese Chicken Jambalaya. Grilled hoisin glazed chicken breast fillet with five -spice barbecue sauce, Hungarian and Chinese sausages served with Peking fried rice. I wanna bang my head on this, in a good way, of course.

Dragon Chop

Dragon Chop. Just in case you wonder where is Daenery’s Drogon is right now, you know where to find him. 🙂

To try all of these may I suggest that you call all your friends so that everyone can order a unique dish to share.

You know where to go Monday, April 20, 2014. Who knows you might just get a year supply of Ilaputi for dining there on their on the first day of their luckiest 13th year!

Cheryl’s Birthday Solution

Netizens were puzzled and mortified when they can’t seem to answer a math problem for a fifth grader in Singapore as posted by Kenneth Kong on his Facebook account.

The problem:

Image coutesy Kenneth Kong / Facebook

Here is my solution with an explation  in its simplest form and in the most unabridged way.

Albert is given the months, therefore it could be either May, June, July or August.

Bernard is given the day so it is either 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 or 19.

Dissection of premisses (statements) and their logical inferences:

Albert:

“I don’t know when Cheryl’s birthday is..”
-Albert don’t know the birthday. Of course, because all months has either two or more possible days. He could not be certain on the day of the month.

“… but I know that Bernard does not know too.”
-For Albert to certainly know that Bernard does not know the birthday, he should have observed that the month that was given to him has a list of possible dates with days that are not unique, like 14, 15, 16 and 17. If it is unique, Bernard would know since there will be no other date with that day. Note that 14, 15, 16 and 17 appeared twice on the list of dates while 18 and 19 only once. Therefore, Albert is given a month that is either July or August as these are the only months with no unique day while Bernard is for sure not given a day that is unique, 18 or 19, it could be 14, 15, 16 or 17.

Bernard:

“At first I don’t know when Cheryl’s birthday is…”
-Of course Bernard would not immediately know as the day is not unique, there are two possible dates for every possible day that he was given.

“but I know now.”
-By deduction like we did earlier, Bernard would be able to conclude that Albert is given July or August. By this conclusion plus his information of the day (it was given to him), he would already know the birthday. It means that the day is something not common between July and August, it is for sure not 14, else Bernard could not be sure of the date.

Albert:

“Then I also know when Cheryl’s birthday is.”

-Again, by deducing from the statement of Bernard, Albert would already know that there are only 3 possible dates left as of the moment, July 16, August 15 and August 17. Since, Albert, the one given the month, already knows, that means it should not be the dates with a common month, else he could not be certain about it. Hence, it is not August, else it will invalidate Albert’s statement that he knows. Eliminating all dates with August month, we are left with July 16.

Therefore, Cheryl’s birthday is July 16.
