Golden Prince Hotel’s Prince Fusion Gourmet Buffet for P420

Golden Prince Hotel’s Prince Fusion Gourmet is now offering seafood dinner buffet every Friday and Saturday for only P420.00. Included in the menu are fresh tuna, large prawns, crabs, rock lobster and cheesy baked oysters. The price is really insane it made me think if they really want to make money on this offering. Sushi is also regular on their menu.

   

   
At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Marlou Almasco who designed not only the seafood choices but also the cebuano fusion recipes like grilled native chicken and pork belly, beef salpicao (really tender) and spicy squid. An interactive pasta station is also included for those who can’t shake off their carbs. 

  
  
No buffet would be complete without desserts. For Prince Fusion Gourmet it’s a spread of red velvet mini cakes, leche flan, fruit salad, sago gulaman and the must-try creamy halo-halo — a concoction of creamy ice shavings, fresh buko, langka, saging, leche flan, cereals and a scoop of ube ice cream. This I can really say it’s a yummy halo-halo with no hints of preservatives from canned ingredients. 
  
   

Golden Prince Hotel’s Prince Fusion Gourmet Dinner is open every Friday and Saturday from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM. You may call (032) 233-8660. It’s an intimate venue with 32 pax seating capacity, reservation is advised.  

Insider info: On September 2015, Gold n Prince Hotel will open it’s expansion tower. It means additional 120 rooms on its existing 57 rooms at Tower 1.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: Ramen Sora 

It was late in the evening, around 10:00 PM, when we were undecided on what to have for late dinner. My self-imposed rule is that when in doubt, the Japanese knows better. Hence, we went to LightSite, A. S. Fortuna for some Japanese ramen quick fix at the newly opened ramen house, Ramen Sora. 

  

Their modern wooden-tile floor compliments their 17 wood tables and chairs, diners are instantly transported to a zen place while waiting for the delivery of their orders. In our case, it was a short one.

  
The sky was the inspiration behind the recipe of Ramen Sora which, literally means “Noodle Soup” and “Sky”. It is a collaboration of 2 seasoned chefs one from the east (Sapporo, Japan), Chef Tomio Takada and the other, from the west (Las Vegas, USA), Chef Yoshinari Ichise. The result is a ramen with light and playful flavors in an aromatic soup that spouts a good kind of funk. 

  

Our order was their famous miso ramen (deluxe). Ramen Noodles with Pork Chashu, egg (tamago), preserved bamboo shoots (menma), spring onions (negi) and nori in a traditional japanese miso soup. 

The noodle is the best noodle I had in Cebu, they have to import it from Sapporo Japan. 

Our order arrived on time at the right temperature. The serving is huge, one serving could in fact feed 2 persons, not bad for a ramen with a price tag of 405 pesos. They also serve shio and shoyu soups.
  

We also ordered the best pair for our ramen, the quintessential gyoza. They were fresh and good but would have been better if mildly spiced. 

  

Ramen Sora is open from Monday to Sunday 10 AM to 11 PM on weekdays and 12 midnight on weekends.

How to best enjoy your Peanut Butter Cup Pancakes from Pancake House 

Have you tried the new Peanut Butter Cup Pancakes from Pancake House? Signature fluffy classic Pancakes and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with banana slices. 

Here’s how to best enjoy it:
1. Choose your stack. 2 pcs for P214.00 or 3 pcs for P318.00.
  
2. I suggest you tick the Banana slices for P20.00for to add contrast to the flavor.
  
 
3. Intagram before meals be sure to tag @pancakehouseph. Official hashtag of the product is #CravingSatisfied.
  
4. Spread the Reese’s Peanut Butter cup on the topmost pancake. Note that the pancakes are filled with Reese’s Peanut Butter in between.
5. Spread the butter with the melted reese’s 
butter cup on the pancake. Go easy on the butter, it might be salted.
   

 

6. Cut the pancake into bite size and savor every chew. A sip of you favorite black coffee would be a good palate cleanser.

Beqaa is a must!

I have completed my list of Top 5 Best Cuisines in the world. The latest to add in that list that includes, Japanese, Italian, French and Thai is Lebanese.

In Cebu, there is one lebanese restaurant that stood above the rest, a kitchen you can recommend even to your finest and most discriminating guests. Beqaa Lebanese Kitchen is another gourmet restaurant from The Abaca Group which brought to Cebu some first-rate restaurants like Abaca in Punta Engano, Lapu-Lapu City and A-Cafe in Crossroads, Banilad. Beqaa is in Design Center, A.S. Fortuna St. (Pine Tree), Banilad, Mandaue City. It serves the freshest and best lebanese and indian cuisine in Cebu.

My Nth Beqaa experience (but on a budget)

We kick-off the night with a sip of pomegranate shot and mojito. The marriage of the fruity sour pomegranate and Bacardi White is a sensation. The best foreplay for our porkless dinner.

Our appetizer is a mixture of meat and vegetables with hints of yoghurt and cheese. These alone set apart Beqaa from any other middle eastern theme restaurant.

For a group of 3 the whole dinner was just P500.00 per pax. You can never be nearer to Lebanon than this with that budget.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: Kushiyaki Chikuzenya Japanese Restaurant

After several visits to Kushiyaki Chikuzenya Japanese Restaurant, I can definitely say it is Cebu’s best Japanese restaurant.

The first time I had their Tonkotsu Ramen I knew I’ll be coming back for more. The firm noodles in pork bone soup seasoned with fresh milk, miso and other japanese spices are waves of flavors potent to cure your weary soul. (TIP: You can ask for free extra soup. Just be polite.)

The special assorted seven kinds of sashimi (Jo Sashimi) platter completes the Japanese restaurant experience along with other staple food like sushi and tempura.

In every Japanese Restaurant cleanliness is a must. The proper handling of the raw ingredients is of utmost importance. Chikuzenya champions that by maintaining an open kitchen, you’ll see your food as it is prepared.

Located at the food avenue of Mandaue, it is close to home but trips should be planned wisely to avoid coming during heavy down pours, we all know the perennial flooding problem at AS Fortuna, right?

RESTAURANT REVIEW: Rico’s Lechon Acacia Branch

Cebuanos are always known to level up their game. Always going global. The famous lechon of the stars is no exception. Cebu’s pride Rico’s lechon in partnership with Pages Group has opened its new full service restaurant at Acacia, just a few meters to the right from another Cebuano hotel chain at Ayala area, Island Stay Hotel.

Designed by the renowned young Cebuano artist, Vito Selma, the place by itself is a celebration of Cebu’s best, from its modern tropical interiors to it’s famous spicy lechon. So nice, you can’t help but take a selfie.

Rico’s Lechon opens from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. It can accommodate up to 450 dining patrons with at least 20 parking slots.

For bringing in innovation in Cebu’s lechon and making it a world class experience, it’s 8/10.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: Yolk Cafe and Restaurant

The sun is always rising at Tan Kim Building, 80 Tres Borces Padres Street, Cebu City, Cebu. Wake up from your hunger at Yolk Cafe and Restaurant. They serve all day breakfast meals , from the healthiest to the heartiest. A quick fix to remedy your day’s warfare, including the finding of a parking slot before having that bacon. I was not that lucky as I used to be in parking, all 4 slots at the front of the shop were already occupied.

The menu is simple and straight forward with a very few items but who needs a spread when you are just after for the bacon (sometimes, chorizo too!), right?

On my first visit I ordered the soft oil-fried Cebu Omellete ( 3 egg omelette with native chorizo and tomatoes) to eliminate my bias with bacon for this review. (One can’t go wrong with bacon.)

The omelette was delicate and mild in flavor. The hints of chorizo did not overpower the egg. It was just the way I like it: slimy but not oily, mild but flavorful, and eggy but meaty.

Meanwhile, their sunny-side up are served in their standard serving size. Two mildly cooked eggs with runny yolks that pair so well with Yolk’s seasoned rice. The pepper (and maybe a little salt too) on the rice is an excellent and clever innovation. This one is really so good!

Yolk Cafe and Restaurant also served Ethopian hot and cold coffee but my favorite is their Singaporean chocolate which taste not far from the artisan kind.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: GIBBS’ HOT WINGS

It is paradoxical that amidst a plethora of highly touted and mainstream restaurants today, the more we develop our natural desire for discovery of something new, off the beaten path —a desire that leads me hunting for hole-in-the-walls.

From the City of no left turns, a simple right turn from the main road of Banilad to Holy Family Village II will lead you to the residences of the Oliva’s where a great but unassuming little restaurant is located. The guards at the entrance gate of the village will tell you to go straight then turn right, then right again, then make a deviant turn to the left (yes, you can turn left here) to reach the maverick Gibbs’ Hot Wings.

SpreadHomey, intimate and casual —the vibe that acquaints the guests as evinced on the façade of the restaurant. A greeting of neighborly smiles by the owner, Coy and his son will welcome diners at the door of this 5-table restaurant that can accommodate up to 20 people inside and 12 more at the veranda al fresco with 4 tables. (A new extension will be opening soon.) The art wall graffiti documenting customers’ authentic satisfaction  is a seducing invitation that imparts sense of belongingness and embrace. One feels like a good ol’ friend, instantly,  ready for the game-night-with-the-boys with the indispensible chicken wings and iced cold beer.

The mats made of cutouts from recycled newspaper give diners a clear environmental conscience just like the absolution the wings will provide on their diet. The refreshed familiarity of the once-big-news on the papers and the low key but radical application of the paper as a mat epitomizes the big ideas of commercialized restaurants versus the impressive ingenuity of hole-in-the-walls.

Gibbs’ classic hot wings are served in five levels of hotness, Hot, Original, Insanely Hot, Level 4 and Level 5. One can go safe and get the Hot or be adventurous to try the Insanely Hot. My personal favorite is Insanely Hot, just the right strength that slowly bites within the mouth with no lingering afterburn. Coy is undoubtedly Cebu’s certified new wingman. He absolutely knows what’s hot for you.

The lightly breaded deep fried wings are coated with red hot and spicy sauce with a little hint of sweetness that integrated so well with the house special dip. The meat was juicy and didn’t stick on the bones; it falls off rather easily with less skin breakage by applying little science on eating wings. The more skin the better.

The best part of the wings is of course the wingette. Alas, you can’t have too much of the best because they serve all the parts of the wings in equal proportion.

Meanwhile, Gibbs’ Angel Wings are crunchy chicken wings, glazed with cream cheese, & garlic sauce, and topped with parmesan cheese. 
The coating was solid and crunchy enough to encapsulate the juice but not to prison the flavor.

There are other wings to choose from, as there are other side dishes. Wings variety includes Honey Garlic Wings, Gibbs’ Hot Wings Level 4 and Gibbs’ Hot Wings Level 5 —the hottest of them all. Wings are priced  from P175.00 to P205.

Progressive Dinner Idea: Cebuano Food Tour

Here is a tried and tested Cebuano Food Tour for the adventurous guests who want to explore  the Cebuano culture in the most immersive way possible. This was my itinerary when I toured a couch surfing chef from the United States on his overnight layover to Cebu.

Six (6) stopovers in one night for a budget of less than P1,000.00 per person, the guest can indulge with the Cebu’s finest food and sights in six (6) hours.

The concept is called progressive dinner. Wikipedia defines it as a dinner party with successive courses prepared and eaten at the residences of different hosts. Usually this involves the consumption of one course at each location. It is a variant of a potluck dinner which involves traveling. I modified it further, instead of residences the locations are carefully selected restaurants that compliments with the Cebuano Food Degustation theme.

THE STOPOVERS

  1. The Meet-up Place.

The meeting place could be in Ayala or SM or anywhere; what is important is you surprise your guest with the Cebuano brand of hospitality. May we suggest that you bring Dried Green Mangoes. It will open the palate of your guests preparing it for a gastronomical adventure ahead.

TIP: Dried Green Mango is an acquired taste but can be very addicting.

 

  1. Cebu’s Original Lechon Belly at The City Times Square

This is the only air-conditioned and decently furnished branch of COLB. It is also the only branch that serves Beef Stew or otherwise locally known as Pochero. For 70 pesos, this give other specialty stores which offer pochero a good run for their money.

For two persons, you may order half a kilo of Spicy Lechon Belly and one serving of Beef Stew. Your guest will have a taste of Cebu’s pride, a pork like no other – the Cebu’s Lechon Belly in the most Cebuano way of eating – by hands armed only with plastic gloves.

This meal will usually cost at around 200 pesos per person.

TIP: Ask the salesperson to re-heat your lechon. It is best enjoyed when hot.

 

  1. The Chocolate Chamber

TCC is located at Pres. Quirino Street corner Magsaysay Street in  Barangay Kasambagan.

In keeping with our theme, the best choice would be puto and sikwate (hot chocolate) made from locally sourced cacao beans served in vintage ornate cups and saucers. Who would have thought sophistication and class could go well with sikwate?

Other artisan quality chocolates and desserts are also available. Local Chocolate has never been respected this much.

The puto and sikwate may cost around 150 pesos per person.

Now that you introduced sophistication to your guest, let’s turn it up a bit further in our next stopover.

TIP: The tablea chips are good pasalubong items in case you are bored with the usual danggit and chicharon.

 

  1. Blue Bar

Blu Bar is located at 1,000 feet high above sea level at the Penthouse of the Marco Polo Hotel. With a little help of their cocktails, go ahead and pretend like you are the king of the world and do it like a boss with your cameras. The viewing deck at the Continental Boardroom area provides the best vantage point for picture taking of the city lights.

My personal favorite is their Mojito valued at around P250.00.

TIP: Blu Bar is closed on Mondays.

  1. La Vie Parissiene

Of course you know La Vie Parissiene. Cebu tourists are always fascinated with the most affordable wines (cheaper than a venti Starbucks), cheeses and pastries under the most superficial cherry blossom trees. To their envy, the would even think of bringing the whole shop home. Thank to La Vie, for making Cebu night caps classy.

But we are not done yet. After the booze, I am sure you need more filling before parking to bed. Next stop is midnight snacks.
